Too Young To Be Old, Too Old To Be Young

Hello Friends ~

Have you ever heard a sentence and thought, “Yeah, that!” Well, this is how I felt when I heard the line quoted above.

As much as it landed for me on a personal level, the universality of the sentence was even more powerful. Every day in conversation with clients, I encounter variations of the same question, “How am I this age?”

The chronological age of our bodies often seems incongruent with the age we ‘feel’ in mind and spirit.

Years ago, I recall being in conversation with a client in her 90s, who had enjoyed a full and active life. Frustrated by feeling treated by her family as ‘old’, she exclaimed to me, “in my mind, I’m only 65!”

The point is — and most of us who reach a certain stage in life have come to realize this — it’s not about our age. Yes, we change. Yes, our bodies perform differently, often in ways we don’t choose. Yes, these changes impact our life in myriad ways. It can be scary, empowering, challenging… all at the same time.

Taking all of this into consideration, the idea that we are “too young to be old and too old to be young” reflects an authentic portrayal of how many of us experience our own aging.

Can we meet ourselves with grace on this journey? Yes. Does it help to be connected to others walking similar paths? Yes. Are opportunities available for us to experience synergy, reminding us of what’s still possible? Yes.

The rapidity of life makes it clear that life is now; let’s make the most of it.
